It is my new notebook... I want to use applications like mplayer,
firefox, chrome. On my old notebook, I can listen from speakers, after
plugging in the headphones, from them. I would like to have the same
functionality.

It does not work automatically on the new notebook. I suppose pcm1, is
the output for the jack headphones.

You don't need virtual_oss to do that. Just configure pins on your soundchip properly. See EXAMPLES section of man snd_hda.
