Why do we not do something like:

        if ! sh -e /etc/rc.conf ; then
echo "Syntax error in /etc/rc.conf, entering single user mode."
1>&2
                exit 1
        fi

in /etc/rc ?

seems like more harm than good. boot might still complete otherwise
but now you are in single user. and how to get out of that :p

Looks like 15.1 behaves exactly like that:

/etc/rc.conf: 13: Syntax error: Unterminated quoted string
Enter full pathname of shell or RETURN for /bin/sh:

Won't it be better to show error message (as above) and revert to default config ?
