ISTR that this particular error can be caused by scrambled symlinks
in the target directory.  symlink(2) can create symlinks to null
filenames ("ln -s '' foo") (despite null filenames being invalid).
"make install" apparently can create a such a symlink near tsch.cat
(I'm not sure when, but mostl likely just when the mtree database is
wrong).  Then "make install" gets confused by the null symlink.
