I had forgotten that the "XDG_DATA_DIRS" setting had caused problems on Gnome3 in the past. The only way I could get my gnome3 apps to work again, was to disable the env entry for XDG: http://www.marcuscom.com/pipermail/marcuscom-devel/2013-December/003069.html
