Jamie hits the nail on the head.  And I guess we're already explicit about
this:

     Most shells provide a builtin echo command which tends to differ from
     this utility in the treatment of options and backslashes.  Consult the
     builtin(1) manual page.

Although it is buried at the bottom of the DESCRIPTION section.

Maybe that could be highlighted in its own section (IMPLEMENTATION NOTES?)
instead.
