Bug ID: 291809
Summary: suggestion: clarify man 5 resolv.conf re: DHCP vs.
resolv.conf
Product: Documentation
Version: Latest
Hardware: Any
OS: Any
Status: New
Severity: Affects Only Me
Priority: ---
Component: Manual Pages

I suggest adding a couple sentences to the resolv.conf man page regarding DHCP
vs. resolv.conf. I can't offer a patch because I don't know how things
actually work, which is why I think adding this would help.
Re: the second paragraph under DESCRIPTION.
If that man page sentence about DHCP is no longer accurate, then it should be
updated. If it's still true that resolver addresses may come from DHCP or
other sources, I think it would be useful to say what happens when both
resolv.conf and DHCP specify an address or addresses.
* If the answer is DHCP wins (exclusively), the man page should say if there's
a way for resolv.conf to override.
* If the answer is resolv.conf wins (exclusively), say somewhere if there's a
way for resolv.conf to specify "use the DHCP-provided address". [I don't see
such an option: nameserver= only takes numeric addresses.]
* If the answer is both, say so, along with saying which is/are tried first.
* Also if the answer is both, is there a way for resolv.conf (or other file or
setting) to say "don't use the DHCP nameserver(s)" or "don't use a particular
nameserver"? I'm not seeing such an option on that man page.
Just a suggestion.
