Hmm are you using -curses? IIRC that only works as long as the guest stays in vga textmode i.e. isn't using X or framebuffee consoles. Oh and if you run qemu as root it may default to -curses too since it probably doesn't have permissions to access your X display... (Usually you dont't need to run qemu as root btw.)
