Thank you Florian.
I've just checked the config of png and APNG was not chosen. So it's not the
default! I'm in the process of reinstalling all ports from scratch and I've
accepted all the default config options.

Please make sure that your graphics/png port is built with the APNG
option set to on (which is the default btw.). After you reinstalled with
APNG=on you should be able to build firefox.
