It is possibly the new support in Firefox of the `system-ui` font:

For me, it defaults to the `Cantarell` family:

  $ fc-match ':family=system-ui'
  Cantarell-Regular.ttf: "Cantarell" "Regular"

My "fix" was to associate `system-ui` with another font family in
~/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf:  

<fontconfig>
...
        <alias>
                <family>system-ui</family>
                <prefer>
                        <family>Liberation Sans</family>
                </prefer>
        </alias>

...
</fontconfig>

I use only a window manger, so there is, or should be, nothing else involved.
