It seems the problem is solved for now.
I replaced the cables with real UDMA66 parts (the ones with 80 wires)
even if the ata controller is only UDMA33.
Currently the drives are running without spitting out any more errors.
Now the drives really operate at the physical maximum transfer rates
up to 16 MB/s measured with iostat.
