I continued investigating the problem and at
http://www5.compaq.com/products/servers/linux/OptionsMatrix.html
I was surprised to find out that not even Linux supports tape drives
(cpqarray) driver with the Compaq Integrated Smart Array Controller.
I say "not even" as Compaq claims that officially supports Linux and
DL380 is one of their certified Linux servers.
I was in contact with one of the Compaq support engineers who told me
that
if I connect the tape to the controller SCSI Port 1 it should work.
Well, it gets detected at boot time by the BIOS but not by the OS.
I've deciced to give up in favor of a network based backup. The
alternative is to stick another SCSI controller which is detectable by
FreeBSD.
Actually with a plain Adaptec UW2940 everything is just fine. But
sticking an Adaptec into a Compaq machine covered by warranty and
support will lead to other complications
I don't even want to think about.
