It depends on how you define "fail". With a hardware failure or no 0x55 0xaa
in the boot block, many BIOSes will fail over.
At least one company has hacked their BIOS to always boot the next drive
after an abnormal warm reboot. Combined with a hardware watchdog, this
will even catch a bad boot loader or kernel on one drive that's in an
infinite loop.
