Actually, the currently implemented method doesn't required devfs. It's
just somewhat easier to use in the devfs case because it doesn't require
a mknod then. I think there are enough good reasons for following the
NetBSD example that's I'll probalby do it. I'm currently trying to
figure out how they implemented it.
