I don't think the machine locks up. Once you type 'tip com2', try
pressing

~ <CONTROL-D>

(press '~', let go, and press <CONTROL> and 'D' together.)

You should exit tip. I doubt the actual machine has stopped running
once this happens.

If I were you and I wanted to communicate with something on the
serial port, I'd use kermit:

$ make search key=kermit
Port:   kermit-7.0.196
Path:   /usr/ports/comms/kermit

lines and sockets
