FreeBSD's 4.x USB stack doesn't grok USB 2.0's ehci host bridge, except in legacy ohci (or is it uhci) mode. As such, I'd expect that you'd not get better than USB 1.0 speeds, which is consistant with 1MB/s you are seeing.
