The oldest message in http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/cvs-src.mbox/cvs-src.mbox seems to be from 2003/03/24.And what makes you think there are any prior messages?
Is there a way to get messages prior to that?
If I remember correctly it was about that time that cvs-src, cvs-ports,
cvs-doc, etc. were created. Previously all commit-messages were sent to
cvs-all only, so you will have to search that list for older messages.

Are you sure? Well, then I am probably confusing it with the split ofYes, http://www.freebsd.org/search/search.html clearly states the following:
CVSROOT in the repository.
The reason why older messages aren't in pipermail is that 2003/03/24 is when we switched from majordomo to mailman.
An alternative way to read the mailing lists archives is to use the Mailman/Pipermail list archive <http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo> (note that this archive only carries messages from March 2003 onward).
