Same problem for me on freebsd 6.0, but on archlinux working just fine.
Tryed on /dev/ulpt0 and /dev/unlpt0 - same error.

I don't think it is cat, it's the ulpt driver.
You haven't said what version of FreeBSD you're using.
Have you tried outputting to /dev/unplt0?
