After some digging around, this turns out to have been caused by the
nullfs.ko module not playing well here after my upgrade to FreeBSD-14.2.
After rebuilding that module locally, all is working now with podman:
# podman run --rm docker.io/dougrabson/hello
!... Hello Podman World ...!
