For the benefit of fellow-sufferers:
I figured it out. It was a plain old DOS problem rather than
Etherboot/FreeBSD.
I took the following lines out of my boot floppy's config.sys:
device=himem.sys /testmem:off
dos=high,umb
stacks=9,256
... and the kernel boots fine.
Now I just need to get my conf files sorted....
