everything works perfectly in 16.0-CURRENT and stable/15. Would it be
possible to officially MFC this patch[2] to stable/15, given that 15.0-
RELEASE has already been published?

Yes, I plan to merge this to stable soon. But at present I'm a little
busy and overwhelmed with daily life and work so I was planning to do
this in a short while.
I'll be starting to work on MFCing this soon though.
