Thanks for all the added context. I was trying to find from where I read about
the minimal kernel being part of pkgbase, but I cannot find it right now. I did
not find it by scanning available packages in 14.3.

Personally, I think the concept of building the kernel this way is great and
hope it becomes more mainstream. It always baffled me why the generic kernel
includes modules for things it has built into it already.

I'm a little bit confused how the minimal kernel is part of the 14.3 amd64
release packages if the releng team is not including minimal kernel in its
builds. Are the 14.3 pkgbase packages also built by others? This kind of
information should be more visible because everything is hosted all at one
place which makes them look official.

I'll try to learn how to use Phabricator to see how I can help.
