This is not about being idiot-proof but being handy to use. It also
reduces service downtime by immediately restarting the service after
update instead of waiting for the administrator to restart it.
This implies that one is doing unattended port updates. IMNSHO that's a
very bad thing - unless you're updating a workstation - in which case you
shouldn't be running any services except sshd.
