If for some reason you have not enough space in /var, you can just create a symlink or set the path in /etc/portsnap.conf(/usr/local/etc/portsnap.conf if it's the one from ports).

They are important for your next "portsnap fetch" run, which means that next run would download only a small set of files, thus save a lot of time and bandwidth.
