If this remains unaddressed, I have experience installing PETSc on various platforms (hpc.lsu.edu) and can take a look at it when once the semester winds down (next week). Please feel free to remind me offlist, if needed. FWIW, the error seems to indicate a problem with Python, which is used as the set up/installation script. It's a pretty non-standard kluge, if you ask me.
