1. Update to release that doesn't include $thing;
2. make -C /usr/src delete-old delete-old-libs;
3. Install $thing or $thing_alternative from ports if you need it.
Step 3 can be done before steps 1 and 2 thanks to FreeBSD having a sane
filesystem hierarchy.
