If sendmail is available via ports, wouldn't that be enough ?
It better be in ports (but don't look at me; I have my hands full with my Mac & iPad with possibly an iPhone and an Android thrown in, and two Penguins); I've spent about 30 years with Sendmail and I ain't changing (I looked at Postfix but didn't like it)...
