Hi, Steve! Do you still observe the same problem? I belive this happened due to the fact how python handles 2.5/2.6 dependencies. It appears that you cannot use this port with python 2.5 as py-cairo requires at least 2.6 version of python. And if you plan to use version 2.6 by default, you probably need to update all your python 2.5 packages as well.
