If it is only for cli and learning programming, I'd suggest to install FreeBSD 4.11. All you need (gcc, perl, python, vim/emacs) is readyly available from the original install cd #1.
I had a comparable box running as a samba fileserver under FreeBSD and even could run a "make world" on it. You need to have at least a cdrom drive or network card in your 486 box for installation.
