Actually I would expect Java to run faster on Solaris, it's their own OS. If it ran slower the trade rags would be all over them. One possibility might be your running binaries downloaded from Sun, these would have been built with the Sun compiler, not gcc, and the sun compiler since it's not a general purpose compiler, does a better job optimizing for Solaris.
