You shouldn't need to download any packages, drivers should be with the source code which you have on the install cds.

Well: output from dmesg would be really usefull, because then we can see what the kernel identifies. Also, just output of ifconfig will give you a list of found interfaces and their current configuration.

If the driver is in the kernel then the nic will appear in dmesg. Then all you have to do is:

ifconfig_<interface> <ip>/<mask>

For wireless it may be more complicated because you also need to set SSID etc.

I'm using FreeBSD 6.0 i386. I downloaded the ISO images last week. I would love to recompile the kernel so that neither works.

Most nic's drivers are in the GENERIC kernel, but if not you can load the needed modules, for example:

  kldload if_iwi
