Yes I have. I also added it to the loader.conf file, the kernel configuration file, done a buildkernel etc. but no luck.

# /boot/loader.conf
wlan_wep_load="YES"

# /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/GENERIC
device wlan_wep

But still no luck. What am I forgetting?

Since I upgraded from FreeBSD 5.4 to 6.0, I cannot for the life of me get
the wi0-interface to work at all (real bummer).

During boot I get the following error message:

    "ieee80211_load_module: load the wlan_wep module by hand for now"

If afterwards I try to fiddle around with ifconfig wepmode on ..., I get the
following error message:

    "ifconfig: SIOCS80211: Operation not permitted"

have you tried kldload wlan_wep ? :)
