First of all you are trying to use kernel ppp. This was completely rewritten because it was so hard to configure and debug and it now called User ppp. ppppd (IE: kernel ppp) was kept around for backwards compatibility. For all practical purposes its dead and just waiting to be removed. You will get better help here if you change to user ppp.
