Did you build this drive in another box and then swap it over to the box it's in now? Sounds like the bootloader doesn't know where your drive is (which is common if you swap in a root drive). Assuming you're using the standard FreeBSD bootloader, have you tried re-initializing the MBR with fdisk? Can't remember the switch, see the fdisk man page. Just a thought - this has happened to me when moving hard drives around.
