I can't, for the life of me, figure out why. I've tried starting it from the SWAT configuration tool and directly running the script /usr/local/etc/rc.d/samba.sh. The nmbd always starts but the smbd doesn't. The log is only providing me with this message:
[2006/03/19 15:44:13, 0] smbd/server.c:main(806)
  smbd version 3.0.20b started.
Copyright Andrew Tridgell and the Samba Team 1992-2005
[2006/03/19 15:44:13, 1] smbd/files.c:file_init(208)
file_init: Information only: requested 10000 open files, 4480 are available.

My windows XP computer can't connect to my Samba server, nevermind any of the shares.

Any reccomendations as to how I can proceed to deduce the problem?
