Well, I've heard that Google builds their newest servers
almost exclusively on Opteron/Supermicro.

Google also back in the day took a bunch of bad donated RAM chips and put them to use using a special parity checking algorithm. The point is that Google doesn't always buy the absolute best hardware--they like many businesses put cost first.
