It sounds like you were lucky with your card -- we tried a 6.1 installation and it did not detect our Intel Pro/1000PT card, while the 7-CURRENT driver did. A back-port of the 7-CURRENT driver looked relatively non-trivial, but the Intel driver for 6.x saved the day.

If it's all working properly, then you should be right to continue with the 6.1 driver you are currently using. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!
