You need "direct rendering" to be enabled from Xorg. Check it with glxinfo $ glxinfo name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes <=== must be yes What is your graphics card ? > Is it generally accepted that a custom kernel with all the fat > trimmed will help?
