/bin/sh is not bash on FreeBSD. IF you're using /bin/sh, then you need to assign and export values as separate operations: FOO=bar export FOO Also, root's shell is not /bin/sh or anything of that ilk by default. It is /bin/csh aka /bin/tcsh, and for that the syntax is: setenv FOO bar Cheers, Matthew -- Dr Matthew J Seaman MA, D.Phil. 7 Priory Courtyard Flat 3 PGP: http://www.infracaninophile.co.uk/pgpkey Ramsgate Kent, CT11 9PW
