It all depends on your workload.  FreeBSD 7.0 will have good scaling
on 8 or more CPUs on common workloads, see e.g.:

anyway it's worth to actually test machine before buying.

even for 1 cpu systems lots of crappy motherboards/BIOSES make problems with these all "inventions" like interrupt routing etc. ending with 100Mbit/s network adapter taking 10-20% of fast CPU
