Install MySQL from Ports - it'll save you a lot of headache.

su root
cd /usr/ports/databases/mysql51-server
make install clean

Edit /etc/rc.conf to add:
mysql_enable="YES"

execute:
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/mysql-server.sh start

Should be good to go after that!
