Yes, because escputil belongs to the 'usb' group. It should belong to the same group as /dev/ulpt0, which should be 'cups'.
A 'chown :cups escputil' should fix that.
Thanks a lot it worked. to check the ink level requires using a raw device so the -r option must be there. I tried to do it without -u but it still saying "Cannot open /dev/ulpt0 read/write: Device busy" maybe there is another way to know the ink level?
