Thank you. I had tried that before posting, but was getting the device name wrong: /dev/ad0

After seeing your response, I persisted with bsdlabel and found that


  bsdlabel /dev/ad0s1

did exactly what I wanted.

I had "slice" and "partition" backwards. It's very clear in the handbook, but I hadn't read that part since I originally partitioned the device and some how got it backwards.
