Actually, there isn't too much of a difference between 7.x and 8.x right now (in comparison to what there will be later on), so I don't see why make buildworld and buildkernel with their respective install targets wouldn't be feasible. You just might have some extra junk libraries or features sitting around your harddrive from 8.x that aren't present in 7.x, but not too many..
