Generally, you want to use ".". The only time you'd use a specific tag is in rare cases where you're using an old (EOL'd) version of FreeBSD and want to point to a known-good snapshot of the ports tree for that branch. For example, RELEASE_4_EOL. So the short answer is, stick with "." as the tag.
