Your mysql binary ought to have an explicit path reference, which you can check via ldd:

% ldd /usr/local/bin/mysql
/usr/local/bin/mysql:
        libreadline.so.5 => /lib/libreadline.so.5 (0x28084000)
        libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x280b1000)
libmysqlclient.so.14 => /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.so.14 (0x280f2000)
[ ... ]

What's the problem you were trying to solve?
