Since I cannot ssh into the snap, can I mount it to my BSD box and run some of those utilities?

Hah, you're asking the right one, man. :-) There are many good tools available from the ports, some of them can even be used for diagnostics and recovery on UFS file systems. The most famous one is The Sleuth Kit, another useful tool is magicrescue. Try and see if they are helpful to you.
