Here's how I fixed the problem:
# freebsd-update -d /path/to/big/path/directory/ upgrade -r 7.1-RC1
# freebsd-update -d /path/to/big/path/directory/ install
Simply use freebsd-update's -d option. man freebsd-update for more info.
