The Canonical Way of Auld(tm)* is detailed in the handbook. It involves fetching the source code via cvsup/csup, and rebuilding the kernel and world(userland), etc. The entire process is covered in Chapter 24 of the handbook; see http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/synching.html for the beginning of the "old way" part.
