This may help to narrow down your problem:
. update your ports tree;
. temporarily remove /etc/make.conf.

And it turns out that the make.conf file was the culprit. I had put an
entry in there
to prevent CUPS from installing lp in the wrong place, and that caused the
problem. All is well.
