For the best performance, you'll have to update to a recent 7-STABLE, or wait for the upcoming 7.2 release. The kernel support code for graphics chips has been updated since the release of 7.1. With this update you should get hardware accellerated 2D from you video card. 3D hardware accelleration for R6xx chips is not complete yet, AFAIK. The xf86-video-radeonhd driver works best, in my experience.
